Open-Sourced Screen Overlay Tool TraceLayer
dogan_karadas · reddit · 2026-07-12
A developer has open-sourced a desktop app called TraceLayer. It overlays a transparent "tracing paper" layer on the screen, allowing users to sketch, annotate, and compare over any software interface (like Revit blueprints, maps, charts, or AI-generated images) without modifying underlying files or building dedicated plugins.
Originally built for quick redlining in Revit, the creator realized the potential of this application-agnostic overlay tool. The next step is to integrate AI features directly onto the overlay, such as auto-generating review notes, screen analysis, and visual comparisons. The project is now open-source, and the community is invited to try it and provide feedback.
