Building a Local Transcription App Live with Claude
johns10davenport · reddit · 2026-07-12
The author is live-streaming on Reddit to build an open-source project called EarWitness from scratch using Claude + CodeMySpec: a "local-first" alternative to Otter.
Project goals include capturing local machine audio directly for local transcription, segmentation, and speaker diarization. It also supports joining meetings as a standard bot to transcribe, and will feature an Otter-like editor for fixing speaker tags and cleaning up transcripts. The author notes the entire dev process is harness-driven; they write no prompts or code, only answering product questions and clicking approve.
The post also mentions:
- Parts of the existing transcription pipeline worked last year, with Claude later completing the segmentation, though clustering isn't finished yet.
- The plan is to have Claude clean up the repo, upgrade to the current version, and initialize the project as a CodeMySpec build.
- The project is already open-source and will be published as it's built. Downloads, bug reports, and feature requests are welcome.
