Codex Chat Silently Switches to Work Mode
whatsupwez · reddit · 2026-07-11
Users report that solving certain problems in Codex's Chat mode triggers a silent switch to Work mode. This is especially noticeable when the reasoning chain invokes Python for precise calculations; the UI displays "Worked for X seconds" and consumes Codex allowance instead of the Chat quota.
The author discovered this only by checking their usage stats: despite asking questions exclusively in Chat mode, their Codex usage allocation dropped. The issue is that this mode transition isn't transparent, meaning users might unknowingly burn through their Work mode quota.
