Anthropic Faces Scrutiny Over Bizarre Billing Spikes

Anthropic was reported to have issued abnormally high bills: A Korean user on a free plan with zero API usage saw their bill surge from $1.67 million to $16.6 million overnight, a 10x increase. Initially suspecting a phishing scam, the user verified that both the sender and payment link originated from Anthropic's official domain. The bank declined the charge due to the absurdly high amount.
The post also noted that auditing startup Vaudit previously identified around $1.7 million in overcharges out of roughly $34 million in AI invoices, mostly tied to Claude Code. Contradictory feedback regarding Anthropic's billing emails has also been continuously surfacing on GitHub.
