Model Selection Tips for Agentic Coding

In agentic coding scenarios, the author shares a practical rule of thumb based on model tiers:

If you don't need top-tier performance, it's usually better to use a lower-tier model with higher effort, as this often yields the same or better results at a lower cost.
Specifically, models below a certain lower tier can be ignored entirely; mid-tier models work well with high effort; only at the highest tier is it worth considering a more powerful model.
For the absolute top tier, the extra cost may not be justified. Unless latency is a critical factor, there's no need to choose the most expensive option.
