Hardcore Stunt: A Real Video Call Phone Built in Minecraft
damnGruz · x · 2026-07-11
As early as 2015, YouTuber CaptainSparklez, in collaboration with Verizon and BlockWorks, created a fully functional "smartphone" within Minecraft. This is not a simple redstone UI disguise; it can **actually browse the web, send text messages, take selfies, and even make real-time video calls with real phones outside the game**. The core system enabling this hardcore feat is called **Boxel**, which "pixelizes" real web pages and live video into Minecraft-style blocks in real time. Combined with a server plugin handling communication between game and outside, the in-game phone behaves like a real smartphone. The project even earned a Guinness World Record certification.
