The AI Race is Far From Over

A reshared perspective argues that last week's narrative—that the AI race is over and only Anthropic and OpenAI remain—was debunked by recent model breakthroughs. OAI, xAI, and Meta have all released stronger models, GLM has open-weights, and Gemini 3.5 Pro, ChatGPT6, and more Chinese LLMs are on the horizon.
The author's core thesis is that this race won't produce a permanent leader anytime soon. The reason is the lack of strong network effects; with enough resources, anyone can train models approaching the frontier. Compared to being at the absolute cutting edge, acting as a "fast follower" a few months behind might be an order of magnitude cheaper. Even if RSI accelerates frontier progress, this capability will gradually democratize just like other AI skills, preventing a permanent model hierarchy.
