Illinois Mandates Third-Party Audits for Frontier AI

ghadfield · x · 2026-07-10

Illinois has passed SB 315, becoming the first state to require frontier AI developers to undergo annual third-party audits. Governor Pritzker has signed the bill, whereas California and New York currently only mandate public safety frameworks and incident reporting.

Commentators agree this strengthens independent oversight but note a flaw in merely "measuring against standards": if developers set their own safety benchmarks too loosely, passing an audit still won't prevent the release of dangerous models.
