Engineered Bacteria Could Power Biological Computing and AI

Cornell spin-off Forage Evolution has genetically engineered a fast-reproducing marine bacteria (Vibrio natriegens) to naturally uptake and express environmental DNA. These cells can rapidly absorb external DNA and express target genes in room-temperature saltwater without traditional lab equipment like electroporators or refrigerators.
The author envisions using this trait to build a "biological breadboard." By continuously feeding new DNA instructions into micro-bioreactors, cells could alter their behavior like executing code. This would drastically accelerate synthetic biology experiments and, combined with microfluidics, could become an innovative tool for future biological computing and engineering education.
