Anthropic Researches Global Workspace in Language Models
AnnaCiaunica · x · 2026-07-09
Anthropic has published new research on the "global workspace" in language models. They claim to have observed a hierarchical structure within Claude that mirrors the human brain's mechanism where "only a small fraction of information is consciously accessible and used for reasoning."
However, a reshared commentary points out that while the findings are intriguing, they shouldn't be over-extrapolated into philosophical claims about "consciousness." The paper merely demonstrates reportable and reasoning-capable information processing, which does not prove the model possesses phenomenal consciousness.
