LLMs Face Limits in Latent Planning Depth
LauraRuis · x · 2026-07-09
Accepted by COLM 2026, this paper investigates whether current top-tier LLMs can discover and execute latent planning strategies in a seemingly simple graph search task. The authors found that while models can perform limited planning without explicit chain-of-thought outputs, this ceiling on "planning depth" appears persistent and does not easily vanish with increased model scale.
