Breaking Down GPU Cloud Billing: Where Does the Money Leak?
WarthogVast3210 · reddit · 2026-07-07
A developer analyzed the pricing models of mainstream GPU clouds, warning that looking only at hourly rates ($0.49/hr vs $0.59/hr) is misleading. True costs are driven by minimum billing increments, idle storage fees, egress traffic, and the ability to truly scale down to zero. Using a 4090 experiment running 12 times a day for 15 minutes each (totaling 3 hours of GPU time and a 100GB dataset) as an example: RunPod charges about $1.77 for compute, but its Volume Disk idle storage rate doubles to $0.20/GB/month, bringing the weighted 100GB storage cost to ~$0.62/day and the total daily cost to ~$2.39. In contrast, Glows includes temporary storage within the instance, costing only $1.47 for the whole day.
