Removing J-Space Leaves Claude Fluent but Impairs Reasoning

For most tasks, Claude doesn't actually need J-space. Researchers found that removing J-space still allowed Claude to express itself fluently, recall facts, and classify text, but its performance on tasks like multi-step reasoning significantly degraded—similar to the distinction between "controlled processing" and "automatic processing" in humans.
