• Data-center build-out at OpenAI: Seven of OpenAI's 20 new roles sit in the "Scaling" department. • Research pipeline at Anthropic and Meta: Anthropic opened two "Anthropic Research Resident" roles, in London and in San Francisco or New York City. Meta AI posted three PhD or research-scientist intern roles and two full-time research roles, in Montreal and London.
• Net growth, with ByteDance trimming: The 32 companies tracked added 71 roles and closed 62 in 24 hours. ByteDance Doubao/Seed (字节跳动豆包/Seed) closed 16 roles and added only 2.

Company moves

OpenAI added 20 and closed 10. Besides the Scaling group, the other roles span several functions:

• Research and data: "Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Human Flourishing" and "Data Scientist, Cloud Distribution & Growth".
• Marketing and design: "Designer", "Motion Designer", "Content Designer" and "Consumer Product Communications Lead".
• Corporate: "Strategic Finance, Workloads" and "Senior Counsel, Competition".

Anthropic added 8 and closed 6. The mix is research residents plus a broad set of support roles:

• Data science: "Data Science Tech Lead Manager, Model Experience" and "Tech Lead Manager, Core Apps Data Scientist".
• Security: "Autonomous Systems Security Engineer".
• Sales: "Senior Partner Systems Analyst" and "Solutions Marketing Manager, Emerging Industries".

Google DeepMind added 8 and closed 1. The roles range from science to product:

• Research: "Research Scientist, SAMBA, DeepMind" and "Research Scientist, Philosophy and Human Values, DeepMind".
• Media: "Research Engineer, Gen Media, DeepMind".
• Product and games: "Group Product Manager, Relevance, GeminiApp, DeepMind" and "Game Designer, Inception, DeepMind".

Meta AI added 8 and closed 3. The infrastructure roles include "Software Engineer - Central Integrity" and "Software Engineer, AI for Incident Response (Technical Leadership)". There is also a partnerships role, "Business Development Manager, AI Partnerships". One research internship covers compression: "Research Scientist Intern - Neural Representations Compression".

NVIDIA added 6 and closed 6. Two Shanghai roles, "Compute System Arch Engineer, AI Infra - New College Grad 2027" and "Architecture Energy Modeling Engineer", point to architecture work in China. The other additions are two Israel engineering roles and the two account-manager roles.

Apple AIML added 2 and closed 4. The additions are "Machine Learning Systems Engineer – Video Computer Vision" in Sunnyvale and "Machine Learning Engineer - Agentic AI" in Herzliya.

Scale AI added 4: "Director of Partner Marketing", "Product Marketing Lead, Enterprise", "Strategist, Bids & Business Development" in London, and "Global Procurement Analyst". This is mostly marketing and business development.

Cursor added 2, led by "Regional Director, Forward Deployed Engineering - Public Sector" in Washington, D.C. It closed 3.

Smaller global additions:

• Perplexity: an SRE role for cloud infrastructure.
• Lovable: "Engineering Lead, Payments" in Stockholm.
• Cohere: "Talent Sourcer, Tech" and "Web Developer".
• Cerebras: "Staff Software Engineer, Observability".

China:

• StepFun (阶跃星辰) added "AI基础设施解决方案架构师" (AI infrastructure solutions architect) and "经营分析" (business analysis).
• Baidu AI (百度 AI) added "ai应用增长运营（J106420）" (AI application growth operations) and "TOB-数字人直播解决方案专家（J106921）" (enterprise digital-human livestream solutions expert).
• ByteDance added "Seed Audio配音导演 - Data语音" (voice-over director for speech data) and "豆包AI大模型产品运营（火山方舟MaaS） - Data AML" (Doubao model product operations, Volcano Ark MaaS).
• MiniMax (MiniMax 海螺) added "云资源安全与运营工程师" (cloud resource security and operations engineer).
• SenseTime (商汤日日新) added "大模型内容安全运营经理" (large-model content safety operations manager).

Microsoft AI, SpaceXAI, Mistral AI, Together AI, Pika Labs, Aleph Alpha and Genmo added nothing today. In China, Moonshot AI (月之暗面 Kimi), DeepSeek (深度求索), Zhipu AI (智谱 AI), ModelBest (面壁智能), Meituan LongCat (美团·龙猫), Tencent Hunyuan (腾讯混元), 01.AI (零一万物) and Alibaba Tongyi Qwen (阿里通义千问) also added nothing today.

What it signals

Over seven days the global labs added 339 roles and the Chinese labs 70. The global figure is spread unevenly. Meta AI leads with 70, followed by OpenAI with 63 and Anthropic with 39. Google DeepMind and Apple AIML each added 32, NVIDIA 27 and SpaceXAI 22. Microsoft AI, Mistral AI, Aleph Alpha and Genmo added none, even though Microsoft AI has 622 open roles. A large open count alone does not mean a company is hiring now.

OpenAI's day looks like a company building physical capacity as well as research. Seven of 20 new roles are Scaling positions covering power, mechanical, fire safety, network and field service. That is a more concrete signal than any single research title. Its 63 additions over seven days against 807 open roles suggest steady expansion, and today's batch is weighted toward infrastructure and regional operations. Anthropic's 39 over seven days is smaller but more research-heavy today, with residents in London and the US and several data-science and security roles.

The Chinese labs are far more concentrated. StepFun accounts for 28 of the 70 seven-day additions, followed by Baidu with 12, ModelBest with 9, and ByteDance and MiniMax with 8 each. Five of 13 Chinese labs recorded no additions in the window, against four of 19 global ones. The roles that did appear lean toward operations and productization: growth operations, digital-human livestreaming, MaaS product operations, content safety and cloud security. StepFun is the exception, with an infrastructure solutions architect role. ByteDance combines 854 open roles, the largest count in the dataset, with 16 closures today and only 8 additions in seven days. That looks like a company clearing a large backlog.

One day and one week are short windows, and a posting is not a hire, so these patterns should be read as direction and not as strategy. The clearest differences are the concentration of OpenAI's new roles in physical infrastructure and the weight of Chinese hiring on operations and product.
