LLMs Read Neural Network Weights Directly, Sparking Debate
Arcturus Labs reports that frontier models can take neural network weights as plain text input and directly reason about the behavior the network encodes—even modifying the weights—without running any training loop. In the experiment, a small 17,253-parameter network was tokenized and fed to models, and Astra, Opus 5.5, and Muse Spark 1.3 all correctly inferred that the network's function was playing Pac-Man.
Confirmed
- Core experiment: a 17,000-parameter network was presented as text, and multiple frontier models successfully identified its behavior and could read, reason about, and rewrite the weights (m4, m5).
- Cross-generation retesting (the author cites results from Alex Krentsel): on the Breakout task, all models before GPT-6 and Opus 5.5 scored below the network trained with reinforcement learning, while the latest two generations scored 18-22x higher; reading weights proved far easier (m3).
- Another MIT demonstration: using only attention patterns over 16 prompts, Astra picked out the model trained to be sycophantic—i.e., a "people pleaser"—in all three attempts. The author notes this is a very narrow but genuinely effective technique that no human could do by hand (m2).
Not Yet Confirmed
- Yoav Goldberg relayed Shauli Ravfogel's skeptical take: Ravfogel had assumed the "reading weights" experiment used a CNN on the full Breakout game with image input, but it was actually a simplified version, so model capability should not be overestimated based on it (m1).
Why It Matters
- If LLMs can truly reliably read and rewrite weights, it would open new paths for "models inspecting models" and "directly intervening in behavior," such as automatically detecting undesirable tendencies like sycophancy.
- However, the capability appears to jump across generations: only the latest models significantly outperform trained networks, and the original demo setting was more simplified than outsiders assumed. When evaluating this capability, one should distinguish task difficulty from model generation.
