Revolut switches 2000 engineers' default coding model to self-hosted GLM

Revolut, Europe's most valuable startup at roughly a $200 billion valuation, has gone public with a major shift in its enterprise AI strategy. Earlier this year, around 2000 engineers were using Claude Code and Codex on usage-based billing, burning $1,000–$10,000 per person per month with returns that didn't justify the cost. The company then switched its default coding model to a self-hosted Chinese open-weight model, GLM, and moved frontier APIs like Claude Code and Codex to an exceptions list. The news was revealed by David Abitbol, Revolut's head of AI operations, in a talk at AI Engineer NYC.
