ChatGPT's dot can now text you via iMessage and RCS
OpenAI has officially announced a Texting feature for ChatGPT's "dot": users can enable "Texting" in Dot's profile and then exchange messages with Dot via iMessage or RCS. The feature is rolling out first to Pro users in the US.
Confirmed
- Users can assign tasks or ask Dot to keep an eye on something using text, photos, or even voice messages, and Dot will proactively send texts with relevant updates rather than just prompting the user to open the App.
- On the safety side, texting is limited to exchanges between the user and their own Dot.
- The same context is available across devices, with texts sharing Dot's state alongside other channels.
- Notifications can be routed separately per channel.
Not Yet Confirmed
- User AIandDesign raised concerns that Dot proactively sending texts may overlap with in-app notifications; this UX debate has yet to receive an official response.
Why It Matters
- User shaunralston, after trying it firsthand, described the experience as "like a real executive assistant," signaling Dot's evolution from a passive in-app assistant toward a proactive SMS touchpoint — a notable step by OpenAI in the everyday-task agent direction.
