Moonshot Releases Kimi K3.1 Pro, a 3T-Class Open-Weight Model Rivaling GPT-6 and Claude
On October 24, Moonshot released Kimi K3.1 Pro, positioning it as "the strongest 3T-class open-weight model to date." Built on a MoE architecture with 2.8T total parameters and 104B activated, it supports 1M token context and multimodality, with a focus on whole-project coding "from idea to finished product" (Unreal/Unity/Godot games, Blender, CAD, etc.). Weights are scheduled to open on November 4.
Confirmed
- Benchmarks: Official charts show K3.1 Pro topping SWE Marathon at 51.7, ahead of Opus 5.5 (46.3) and Fable 5.1 (45.6); it beats Opus 5.5 on 9 of 14 benchmarks and GPT-6 Astra on 10 (relayed by haider1). Terminal-Bench 4.0 comes in at 65.7%, beating GPT-6 Astra (58.2%) and trailing Opus 5.5 by only 0.7 points, at roughly $4–5.5 per task—about a third of Claude's cost.
- Specialized skills: OfficeQA Pro v2 at 64.4 for SOTA, beating Opus 5.5 (62.2); financial modeling up 7.2 points and financial research up 11.6 points over K3; BenchCAD at 92.7%, close to top closed-source models, with direct operation of Blender, Unreal, Godot, CAD, and other tools.
- Pricing: API at $2.00/MTok input and $10.00/MTok output—two-thirds of K3's price—with cache hits at $0.20/MTok; also launched the 2–3x faster K3.1 Pro Highspeed ($4.00/MTok input). Artificial Analysis confirmed an across-the-board 33% price cut versus K3, with per-task cost at $1.98, on par with the previous generation.
- Technical details: The official blog describes K3.1 Pro as a post-trained version of K3, with substantially more post-training compute, joint large-scale RL across hundreds of downstream domains, and improvements to the RL framework, long-context reasoning, training efficiency, and sandbox infrastructure (also relayed by natolambert).
Unconfirmed
- No independent external evaluations yet; results mainly come from official benchmark charts. Despite the price cut, bindureddy argues it falls short of a 5x reduction and DeepSeek still wins on value.
Why it matters
- If independently verified, K3.1 Pro becomes another open-weight benchmark against closed-source flagships (Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra), delivering near-parity performance at roughly 1/3–1/4 the cost. The announcement also moved related prediction markets on Polymarket. Community testing after weights open on November 4 will be the key validation point.
