Study: LLM Tool Lets a Few Editors Produce a Third of Korean Wikipedia's New Content
The arXiv paper "When the Commons Appropriates a Large Language Model" studies WikiVault, an LLM editing tool built by the Korean Wikipedia community itself. Long hampered by contributor shortages, coverage gaps, and heavy translation workloads, the community developed this LLM-powered tool, mainly to translate articles from English Wikipedia while also assisting drafting, preserving wiki syntax elements like links, citations, and templates.
Confirmed
- The research comes from a Princeton University team, combining 10 interviews with a quasi-experimental controlled design.
- WikiVault was adopted by only a small group of veteran editors; after deployment, active users numbered around 7-15, making hundreds of edits per week.
- These adopters' output surged disproportionately: a handful of people, about 0.1% of all editors, contributed roughly one-third of the new bytes added to Korean Wikipedia.
Why it matters
- This is a rare empirical case of "a commons community embracing a large model on its own": the tool wasn't pushed by the platform, but built by the wiki community itself to solve its translation labor shortage.
- The results show AI tools can dramatically amplify the productivity of a few veteran editors, reshaping the concentration structure of knowledge production — with implications for other language wikis and crowdsourced communities.
