Neuralink Pretrains BCI Foundation Model on 50,000 Hours of Neural Data

In early October, Neuralink disclosed major clinical trial progress: its participants have collectively used their implants for over 50,000 hours, generating massive amounts of unlabeled neural data and building one of the largest intracortical neural activity datasets ever. Rather than training decoders from scratch for each patient, the team first pretrains a self-supervised neural encoder on thousands of hours of multi-person brain activity data, then adapts it to individuals, aiming to build a "brain-computer interface foundation model."
