Musk Lives in an Airstream by Memphis Site to Oversee xAI Colossus Buildout
Speaking at the All-In Summit, Elon Musk revealed he has been living in an Airstream trailer next to xAI's Colossus data center in Memphis, Tennessee for over ten days, working alongside engineers to accelerate the supercomputer's buildout.
Confirmed
- According to the All-In podcast, Musk has temporarily relocated to the Memphis site to personally oversee the Colossus construction (m2, m4, m5).
- SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell publicly commented that "he does sleep on the factory floor," describing it as classic Elon behavior, and noted he is overseeing Colossus II (m3, m5).
- Musk himself reposted a joking post on X, self-deprecatingly calling the Airstream the first trillionaire's "palace" with the caption "In America, you can just do things" (m1).
- The Colossus data center was previously built in a record 122 days (mentioned in m5).
Unconfirmed
- A QbitAI report suggests Musk hinted at a possible future merger between Tesla and SpaceX; this claim appears in only one secondhand account with no details.
Why it matters
- The world's richest person camping on-site to supervise AI compute infrastructure is widely seen as a signal that xAI's compute race is intensifying, consistent with Musk's hands-on, sleep-by-the-production-line style.
- If the Tesla-SpaceX merger hint were true, it would reshape Musk's business empire, but current evidence is insufficient.
