OpenAI Codex Community Hosts Meetups and Hackathons Across Nearly 50 Cities Worldwide

The OpenAI Codex community, via local ambassadors and Astra Commons organizers, is running a dense wave of offline developer events worldwide. Per @pawlean's September 14 roundup, 20+ cities hosted Astra Commons meetups, demos, and weekend hackathons that week—including Ho Chi Minh City, Osaka, Tokyo, Paris, Taipei, Manila, Vienna, Rio, Pune, Melbourne, and Barcelona, with Kozhikode, India also listed. A September 15 follow-up expanded the scope to nearly 50 cities globally this month, with September 14–19 spanning Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.

Confirmed

Events are driven by OpenAI Codex community ambassadors and Astra Commons organizers, in formats including build nights, hackathons, workshops, and demos
A single mid-September week saw events in 20+ cities, including Ho Chi Minh City, Osaka, Barcelona, Taipei, Tokyo, Paris, Manila, Madrid, Melbourne, Vienna, Rio, Salvador, and Pune
Per a September 16 update, 20 more events remain before September 30, spanning Ecuador, Paris, Kazakhstan, and elsewhere; content covers Codex from initial setup to advanced multi-agent usage
Overall scale for the month approaches 50 cities globally

Why it matters

This is a rare, large-scale global offline push by the Codex community, showing OpenAI accelerating penetration into emerging developer markets (Latin America, Southeast Asia, Central Asia) through its ambassador system rather than focusing only on core Western cities.
