Dev hacks Smash 64 to run in browser, lets 1000 players join as characters
Developer turtlesoupy, loving Smash 64 and wanting himself in the game, modded the original ROM to run in the browser and packed himself plus 1000 other players into the roster. Anyone can visit smash.fun to upload their own likeness and join.
Confirmed
- Developer is turtlesoupy; the site is smash.fun
- The original Super Smash Bros. 64 ROM was modded to be playable directly in the browser
- It currently includes turtlesoupy and 1000 other players' characters; uploads are open to anyone
- yacineMTB praised the project (multiple reposts relay the same information)
Why it matters
- A playful case combining retro ROM hacking, web tech, and community co-creation: an N64 classic brought to the browser without an official remake, with over a thousand players joining as themselves.
