Anthropic to Introduce Invisible Watermarks for Claude Starting 2026
Anthropic announced that to comply with the EU AI Act transparency guidelines it signed, all newly released Claude models globally will be required to include machine-readable markers for AI-generated content traceability starting August 2, 2026.
The new rule applies to Claude models released in the EU on or after August 2, 2026, with the feature built-in from day one.
The marking mechanism consists of two layers. The first is a text watermark woven directly into the generated text rather than metadata; it is invisible to the human eye and survives copying, pasting, and even partial editing. The second layer is a C2PA signature (Content Credentials) used to tag file metadata.
This move represents Anthropic's commitment to and compliance with the EU Artificial Intelligence Act's Code of Practice on AI-generated content transparency.
Adding this feature means text generated by Claude will be permanently stamped with a machine-readable mark, helping identify AI-generated content and prevent abuse and the spread of disinformation.
As the EU AI Act takes effect, major AI model providers proactively introducing watermark and signature mechanisms could become a new compliance standard across the industry.
