Anthropic to Embed Invisible Watermarks in Claude Outputs Following EU AI Act

ns123abc · x · 2026-08-11

Anthropic has signed the EU AI Act's Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. As part of its commitments, new Claude models launched in the EU on or after August 2, 2026 will support machine-readable marking from day one.

The implementation includes embedding invisible watermarks in generated text and attaching digitally signed provenance metadata to supported files. These marks will apply globally across all Claude interfaces, including the API, Claude web interface, and Claude Code. Anthropic also plans to help third parties detect these marks and will work to add marking support for existing models during the legal transition period.
