Lilian Weng returns to OpenAI within a week, to lead recursive self-improvement team

Lilian Weng, co-founder of Thinking Machines Lab (TML), has returned to OpenAI less than a week after leaving due to startup stress and health issues. She will lead a high-priority team on recursive self-improvement (RSI), aiming to let models train and improve their successors. This move underscores OpenAI's core technical focus and highlights burnout concerns in the AI industry.

According to The Information and WSJ reporter Stephanie Palazzolo, Weng left TML due to startup pressure and health reasons, and has now confirmed her return to OpenAI.
In her farewell letter, Weng said the past seven months of intense overwork severely affected her health. Per TechCrunch, she prefers a research environment with clear responsibilities and higher predictability.
Upon return, her focus will be on exploring recursive self-improvement (RSI) technology, i.e., using AI to develop new models.
Her departure also meant TML, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, lost four of its six co-founders.
