Open-source VRCGS Upgrade Enables 100M Gaussian Splats in VRChat
Recently, the VRChat platform introduced 3D Gaussian Splatting technology, significantly improving the rendering quality and immersion of virtual reality scenes. Following this, developer MichaelMoroz released a fully open-source LOD update for the VRChat Gaussian Splatting (VRCGS) tool, pushing its rendering capabilities to new heights.
Core Upgrades and Test Performance
The VRCGS upgrade includes numerous changes compared to version v3, with the core breakthrough being support for rendering up to 100 million splats. To verify the new version's peak performance, the developer conducted a live demonstration: the system successfully rendered massive data containing 85 million Gaussian points in real-time within VRChat. This accurately recreated a real-world terrain covering an area of 4x2 kilometers (4 square kilometers). Based on the Jastrzębia Góra region in Poland, the demo showcases the tool's immense potential for handling ultra-large-scale, real-world 3D data.
