Gradio spotlights ICML 2026 paper reproduction challenge
In mid-July, Gradio posted and amplified information about an “ICML 2026 paper reproduction challenge,” and also launched a challenge leaderboard. The effort aims to mobilize independent researchers and agent-based workflows to systematically reproduce published, accepted, and award-winning ICML 2026 papers. What makes it notable is the attempt to turn paper reproducibility checks into a public, large-scale community process rather than isolated one-off efforts.
Challenge format
According to Gradio and posts it reposted, participants can pick an ICML paper and try to reproduce the full work, or test a specific claim or result from that paper. The posts also say participants may use automated tools or agent-style workflows to carry out the reproduction process. Gradio said the leaderboard comes with prizes, including up to $4,000 in GPU credits plus other awards.
Early progress
In a progress post reshared by Niels Rogge, 73 papers had already been partly or fully reproduced shortly after the challenge began. By July 17, another repost cited more than 600 participants. That post also said contributors could create logbooks and posters to document their reproduction process and findings.
How organizers frame the problem
In its kickoff post, Gradio said many AI papers are not reproducible. In another post reshared by Niels Rogge, the organizers’ backdrop was summarized as a claim that 70% of AI research is not reproducible. Reposted material also argued that before AI agents, attempting reproduction at the scale of an entire conference was almost infeasible, whereas agent-based workflows may now make that kind of systematic effort possible.
