Allen AI Introduces Maritime AI Agent 'Shippy'

Allen AI has disclosed 'Shippy,' an AI agent designed for maritime intelligence scenarios, along with its underlying architecture. Built on the Skylight real-time maritime intelligence platform, the system allows users to ask questions directly in natural language, integrating multi-source data with citations to return actionable intelligence within minutes. Shippy is currently in a private preview phase with select partners. It is noteworthy because the team has focused on the engineering problem of 'whether it can be trusted,' rather than just raw model capabilities.

Product Positioning and Scenarios

Allen AI describes Shippy as an AI agent serving maritime safety and enabling the 'real-time protection of oceans,' targeting analysts working in real-time at sea. The team notes that such scenarios offer very little room for error—a wrong answer could misdirect a patrol ship. Therefore, the system design must prioritize reliability and traceability over simply chasing response speed or feature stacking.

Key Architectural Design

According to the team, Shippy's core capability stems from its integration with Skylight: after a user asks a question in natural language, the system aggregates multi-source data, provides citations, and produces actionable conclusions rapidly. To prevent lost or misread results, Allen AI designed a dedicated Agent CLI for querying Skylight, supporting typed parameters, authentication, pagination, and structured output. A key practice here is writing large queries to disk rather than passing them directly through a shell pipeline.

Hosting and Isolation

Allen AI also shared the philosophy behind 'Mothership,' its multi-tenant hosting layer. Because Shippy serves hundreds of organizations across more than 70 countries, the platform places each conversation into an independent, temporarily isolated session to ensure that data remains invisible between different organizations. The company added that a related engineering blog details how the system was built, future plans, and how it ensures users can trust and trace its outputs.
