OpenAI researcher Dave Holtz revealed findings from a lab experiment: when users are given more capable models but fail to adapt their prompting strategies, they leave about 50% of the performance gains on the table.
He emphasized that half of AI's value comes from how users interact with it. This is especially true for precision-oriented tasks where steering the model is crucial, contrasting with creative tasks. A user shared a practical workaround: asking GPT to read official prompting guidelines and generate an optimized prompt automatically, which makes a huge difference in output quality.
