AI Drug Discovery Debate: Pre-Clinical Abundance Can Still Lift Clinical Success Rates
IgorCarron · x · 2026-11-08
Pushing back on the "clinical as the true bottleneck" argument, Sylvain Gariel argues chemical synthesis is itself a bottleneck from discovery to preclinical work, while clinical trials are obviously another huge one — both are true at once. Even though a clinical trial creates more value, getting a better molecule on a hard target to the clinic faster and cheaper is still a huge win.
He frames "pre-clinical abundance" as a way to improve clinical success rates: investors and pharma pick from a bigger pool of programs to fund through the clinic. Igor Carron agrees.
