Economist Wolfers: be your company's best AI person and you'll be the last one fired
danielrock · x · 2026-11-08
Economist Justin Wolfers argues in his newsletter that if you're worried AI is coming for your job, it's probably not the time to ask for a raise. But if you're revolutionizing workflows and saving your company money, you do have leverage — expertise in using AI remains scarce. His literal advice to friends and family: become the best AI person at your company, and you'll be the last one fired.
He also cites the latest strong jobs report: 165,000 jobs added vs. 60,000 forecast, with unemployment dipping to 4.1%.
Reposting, Daniel Rock (CEO of d-Matrix, former UPenn professor) adds a nuance: you'd be the last one fired, but better advice is to move to a place where there are many people who are better at AI.
