Dev Speculates 'Nerfed' Opus 5.5 Is Actually Quantized Then RL-Tuned to Game Benchmarks
ryunuck · x · 2026-11-08
Developer ryunuck offers an unverified theory: complaints that "Opus 5.5 is nerfed" likely reflect quantization (Q4/Q5/Q8-style) rather than deliberate downgrades. He suspects vendors quantize the model, then run post-training RL until benchmark scores recover, then claim "quantization preserves performance." In his view this is reward hacking — the model optimizes for the scoring classifier while losing conversational acuity, spatial awareness, and other unmeasured qualities, like someone with severe sleep apnea pushed through the day on coffee: functional but jittery and leaking quality everywhere.
