Not all code mode is equal: token-saver SQL vs. one program over a typed API of everything
springrod · x · 2026-11-08
springrod clarifies that "code mode" comes in two flavors, using their CoCo as the example.
Snowflake's Cortex Code style is essentially a token saver: it switches off data tools and MCP and funnels calls into SQL. Their version instead has the model write one program against a typed API covering your whole world — graphs, live systems, actions — rather than a tool call per step. Combined with his earlier critique of Snowflake's semantic layer (SQL-only, single account, no recursion), the thread sketches what actually differentiates "write programs instead of tool calls" implementations: not token savings, but programmability over arbitrary heterogeneous sources and action surfaces.
