Traditional Data Roles Are Being Commoditized—AI Agent Skills Now Command $200K

Data science educator Matt Dancho warns that traditional data roles are dying in 2026.
He splits data professionals into two tracks:
- Track 1 (traditional data scientist): task-based work—dashboards and ML models nobody uses, zero ROI, now automatable by AI and being commoditized.
- Track 2 (AI + DS systems builder): workflow-based, using AI agents to automate entire data analytics processes—a role companies will pay $200K for.
An attached chart maps skill radar profiles for data engineers, ML engineers, data scientists, and analysts across ML Ops, pipelines, stats, storytelling, and more.
