OpenAI reportedly mass-bans accounts: API resellers, shared seats and low-price regions hit
机器之心 · wechat · 2026-11-07
Chinese media aggregate widespread user reports that OpenAI is mass-banning ChatGPT accounts without email notice. Hard-hit categories: accounts reselling free API quota, shared/parked Team seats, reverse proxies like codex2api, low-price-region accounts (Turkey, Philippines, Egypt), and student-verified accounts — even some Pro tiers.
Speculated causes: a crackdown on API reselling and model distillation (following OpenAI's earlier blog on blocking a coordinated distillation campaign); new device/payment-card limits rolled out around Nov 2 restricting multiple paid accounts per card; and the new Usage Policies effective Nov 20 restricting training competing models and requiring approval for access intermediators.
Less credible theories tie the timing to Cat Wu (ex-Anthropic Claude Code lead) joining OpenAI, or the routine pre-launch account purges. OpenAI has made no official statement; banned users face loss of chat history and project context, with appeals via the email link.
