A stoplight checklist for switching to a newer model version behind an API
ClickOk5811 · reddit · 2026-11-07
A green/yellow/red checklist for swapping a newer model into your app: pin the dated snapshot, build a fixed eval set from real traffic, and define metrics before testing.
Green: pass rates within tolerance, outputs still parse, cost/latency within budget (check token usage, not just per-token price), 20 manual diffs show no new error classes. Yellow: category-specific regressions, changed instruction-following (verbosity, refusals) — retune the prompt and rerun everything. Red: regressions in expensive-to-fail cases, unparseable formats, unexplainable behavior.
Roll out gradually with production monitoring, keep the old version for rollback, log which model version produced each answer — and remember eval sets miss unseen cases and averages hide rare severe failures.
