Cancelling ChatGPT Plus? Data Exports Take Up to 7 Days and the Link Dies in 24 Hours
Ok_Negotiation_2587 · reddit · 2026-11-07
As many users plan to cancel ChatGPT Plus before December's shared usage changes, a Reddit user flags the export timing trap:
- OpenAI's own page says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after it appears — you must be signed in to the same account to download it.
- Request it on your last day and the email may arrive after you've stopped checking, forcing a restart; the Settings export button doesn't work while logged out.
- If you can't log in at all, you're routed to the Privacy Portal with no stated timeline.
Tips: check spam, download on a computer, and open the zip to verify chats before cancelling — exports can't restore deleted conversations. Business/Enterprise workspaces don't get Settings exports at all. The author also promotes their browser extension AI Toolbox, which exports directly from the chat page (single chat free, bulk export paid).
