Weekend Project: Halftone QR Codes That Still Scan Reliably
vincent_koc · x · 2026-11-07
Hackaday features a from-scratch JavaScript halftone QR code generator by Jorge C. Lucero, inspired by Hung-Kuo Chu et al.'s 2013 paper. The algorithm treats each data module as a 3×3 grid of submodules, using only the center submodule for the module's true color and freeing the rest for halftone shading, blending images into QR codes without relying on scanner error correction. An optional 'enhancement' mode trades a few correctable scanning errors for sharper images, with clear improvements over binary image embedding at higher QR resolutions.
