Acronis's Threat Research Unit disclosed BOSSAI, a campaign in which a single operator (reportedly Taiwanese) used 12 role-specialized AI agents on open-source agentic pentesting platforms to target hundreds of organizations in 11 countries — emergency services, banks, universities, military systems, e-commerce and gambling sites.
Key details:
- Researchers found it via a misconfigured dev server holding 90,000+ files, 9GB of logs, chat histories, exploit tools and victim data
- Breaches at universities and emergency services confirmed; medical and personal data exfiltrated
- Acronis's conclusion: one person with rented GPUs and open-source tools can now run what previously took a full team — activity that "looks state-backed but comes from one individual"
A rare concrete case of "one person + AI agents = state-grade attack capability."
