Musk: 20-30M humanoid robots could match entire US output; Tesla may rent Optimus instead of selling

Elon Musk laid out his economic case for humanoid robots:
- Productivity: One humanoid robot could deliver at least 5x the weekly productivity of a human worker — 24/7 operation (168 hours/week), no vacations or breaks, faster physical movement. Just 20-30 million robots could theoretically match the output of 120 million productive American workers.
- Manufacturing cost: Initial build cost roughly comparable to a car; Ron Baron suggested it could fall from $30,000 toward $20,000 at scale, which Musk agreed with.
- Business model: Tesla will likely rent Optimus units rather than sell them, opening a robotics-labor-as-a-service model.
These are theoretical projections for Tesla Optimus, not validated production figures.
