New SmoothScore metric quantifies how LLM research reports overstate evidence via 'smoothing'
gregd_nlp · x · 2026-11-07
New research shows LLM agents synthesizing multiple sources tend to 'smooth over' evidence: mixed or conditional findings get flattened into stronger, broader claims — e.g. 'method A beats method B' — with confidence exceeding what the sources support.
The team names this phenomenon smoothing and introduces SmoothScore to measure and quantify the effect, offering a new tool for evaluating faithfulness of LLM-written research reports. Led by Tiasa, with ManyaWadhwa1 amplifying.
