Google designers on generative UI: stop designing for AI, design for people
GoogleDesign · x · 2026-11-06
Google's design team joined It's Nice That at New York Live Arts to ask what happens to screens when software can generate interfaces on demand.
- DeepMind design VP Jenny Blackburn and Google Fellow Matias Duarte argue digital design is repeating the horseless-carriage mistake: funneling models capable of real-time vision, voice, code and reasoning into early-2000s text boxes. The reset: "we aren't here to design for AI; we're here to design for people."
- The team shares internal practices, including Chrome extensions that edit live production builds and system instructions that teach models to art-direct 3D scenes, exploring interfaces beyond static grids, cards and text boxes.
