Custom GPTs die Dec 11: if you use someone else's GPT, you can't migrate it
Ok_Negotiation_2587 · reddit · 2026-11-06
OpenAI's custom GPTs retire Dec 11 (deferred Enterprise workspaces get until Feb 11, 2027), and most coverage misses the group affected most: people who use GPTs made by others.
Per the official FAQ:
- You cannot migrate someone else's GPT — "permission to use it does not let you migrate it yourself"
- Access to the original doesn't carry over to a replacement plugin; migrated plugins start private, and publishing one requires a separate submission
- Migration uses only the latest published version (drafts don't transfer), the original becomes read-only and undeletable, the chosen model doesn't carry over, and custom actions calling external services must be rebuilt, possibly as MCP servers
- Old chats remain accessible, but the GPT page itself disappears
The author's to-do list: inventory the GPTs you'd miss and their creators, check for replacement links, save 3-4 familiar prompts per GPT to compare replacement behavior, and creators should publish final edits before migrating. (Post includes a plug for the author's own product.)
