MCP vs API vs CLI: build one operations layer, put your care into the MCP server
hottown · reddit · 2026-11-06
A Wasp guide compares MCP, REST APIs, and CLIs for connecting AI agents to apps. MCP, built specifically for agents, tells agents what they should do on both server and client (Claude Code, ChatGPT desktop) and suits human-in-the-loop tasks—so put most of your care there. APIs remain best for agent-free work: data exports, bulk writes, nightly syncs, and rerunnable scripts (many clients don't support MCP code mode yet). CLIs are rarely needed unless agents must read local files. Advice: put server logic in plain functions and build MCP server and REST API as thin adapters over one operations layer.
