bricky treats LEGO design as a compiler problem, giving agents exact error messages instead of renders

Andreas Maier reviews bricky, a new open-source tool (v0.1.0) that frames physical design as a compiler problem. Agents write software well partly because compilers return exact, local feedback—the rule broken and the line responsible. LEGO design fails silently instead: overlapping bricks, floating plates, half-stud offsets that a render shows as "looks odd" without saying why.
How bricky works:
- The agent writes a Python build script placing parts by BrickLink ID at integer stud/plate positions
- bricky build maps each element back to its script line, then runs passes: schema, collision, connectivity, stability
- Errors come back as compiler-style diagnostics, e.g. error[overlap] naming the shared region plus both bricks' part, colour and exact script lines
The broader lesson: agents improve fastest where their output can be checked exactly—give models structured error messages, not pictures.
