MOSAIC agent swarm discovers fractional Chern insulator gaps 10x beyond ideal quantum geometry

A University of Pittsburgh-led team published an arXiv paper using MOSAIC, a decentralized swarm of AI agents (Claude Opus 5.5), for open-ended physics discovery.
- Instead of prescribing a model, GPT-6 Astra proposes a theoretical framework; the agent swarm autonomously explores diverse strategies, exchanges findings and forms insights without centralized coordination, outperforming isolated agents with the same tools.
- Contrary to the belief that ideal quantum geometry favors fractional states, departing from that limit dramatically enhances robustness: many-body gaps of fractional Chern insulators grow more than an order of magnitude larger, potentially enabling study of anyons at higher temperatures.
An example of AI moving from problem-solving to self-directed scientific discovery.
