Open-source F1 telemetry tool quantifies energy clipping: ~0.25s per lap in Austin
JeremyCMorgan · x · 2026-11-06
In 2026 F1 cars draw about half their power from a battery; on long straights the battery depletes and cars lose speed at full throttle — "super clipping." An open-source GitHub project, F1EnergyClippingAnalysis, pulls fastest-lap telemetry from OpenF1 and automatically detects this for every driver, publishing results after each race weekend.
In Austin it costs roughly 0.25s per lap on average — close to the P1-to-P5 gap. The project ships with CI/CD: tests on every push, results auto-deployed to GitHub Pages.
