OpenAI Pledges Full Grid Costs and Transparency for Its Datacenters, Wants Rules for All
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-11-06
OpenAI announced a set of self-imposed rules for datacenter campuses it owns: pay full electricity and grid costs, post financial guarantees if a project is cut, publish water/power/noise/hiring numbers, avoid NDAs with officials, and fund local priorities such as a $4.8M school meals grant in Georgia.
It also wants regulators to make these rules apply to every developer—large power users would cover the grid costs they add, and campuses could connect faster by agreeing to cut demand at peak times, as OpenAI's Georgia Power deal allows cuts of up to 1,000 MW.
The real goal is to ease local anger over power bills, water use, and secret deals that could slow permits and grid connections for its Stargate buildout, while making rivals carry the same costs.
