METR publishes report assessing whether AI is accelerating AI development at Anthropic

METR has published a report on a risk assessment begun in August, using internal Anthropic information to evaluate whether AI itself is accelerating AI development. Its accompanying illustrative sketch—watermarked "FAKE DATA"—guesses most of the current acceleration in the AECI metric is due to AI, separating excess growth into AI vs non-AI factors. Observers praised the tongue-in-cheek watermark as knowing its audience.
